Chapter Twelve

On the way into town, she rode next to the passenger window, but on the return trip Deborah slid over next to him because it felt right. She didn't think about it first, just did it, but when he made no protest, she thought he must like it. They talked all the way to the farm, mostly about the kids and a little about his sister.

“Her husband is an over-the-road truck driver,” Cam told her as they turned onto what she could recognize as the road that led to the Putnam farm. “Chris is gone a lot, but Beck manages, even with the kids.”

“The kids are adorable,” she said and meant it. Growing up back on Rodney Street back down in Bossier, she dreamed of having a career, then a husband, and then a few babies. She had the career—twice, now—but no husband or children loomed on her horizon. That evoked a deep, sad ache somewhere within as she wondered if she would ever have a family of her own.

“Yeah, they’re great.”

Cam was a great uncle. He would be a good father, too.

She thought they were heading straight back to the farm, but he took a different road, an unfamiliar one, and she didn’t realize it for a while.

“Aren’t we going home?”

He shot her a sideways glance that teased and kindled her desire for a kiss.

“Do you want to?”

Deborah shook her head. “No, I don’t really want to go back yet. I’m enjoying my temporary freedom.”

“I thought that you were,” Cam chuckled. “I thought you might want to run up to see the lake before we go back to Aunt Francie’s. It’s pretty up there.”

“What lake is it?”

“It’s DeQueen Lake. Army made it from part of the Rolling Fork about twenty-five years ago. I haven’t been up here in years, but I thought while I was home I would go see it again. We are almost there now.”

Cam said it was a pretty lake, and it was, with clear waters sparkling under the spring sun. It proved to be larger than she expected with miles of shoreline. They drove around part of the lake before pulling in to admire the lakeshore and the water beyond from Ridge Park Road. Once he parked the old truck, she became very aware of his proximity, so much that little quivers darted down her back. She let her hand lie across his thigh, and at her touch he inclined his head in her direction and grinned.

“This is one of my favorite spots on the lake,” Cam said sounding wistful. “I like to come up here, fish, and get away from everything. Maybe one of these days we can bring a picnic lunch up here.”

“That would be nice,” Deborah said as her heart beat staccato. He sounded like they were a couple, maybe dating, instead of a federal marshal and a refugee from the Witness Protection Program. She liked that too much to disagree.

He rolled down the window to let the clean, soft spring air fill the cab of the truck and then stretched out his arm across her shoulders.
